Children of the Light
Sunday, December 23, 2018
Today we celebrate the coming of the Light. Today we, as a family, celebrate the coming of Jesus into the world as a babe. We lit the fourth candle of Advent. The candle of Peace.
This evening we will light the candle of the Christ Child. We will partake of the broken body and the spilled blood of our Savior.
The child whose birth we celebrate this morning gave His life that we might have life. As children of the Light we partake of His gift of salvation.
The greatest gift we have been given is this gift of salvation, a restored relationship with our Father, Creator of All Things. This is the best of the good things God does for us and we are grateful. James put it this way.
16 Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. (NIV)
The Father of the heavenly lights chose to give us birth and we are the children of the Light. Every good gift and every perfect gift comes from our Father. We are grateful.
Our Father gives all good and perfect gifts. As we celebrate Christmas with our traditions of family meals and sharing of gifts. We are in good company. Our Father gives good gifts to His children.
He has never changed. He never will change. People change. He will not. You can trust Him to see you through to the end.
We are the firstfruits of all He created. This means we are the best of the lot. When you give the firstfruits to God, you are giving the first and the best of the crop. We are His firstfruits.
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. (NIV)
Once we lived in darkness. We did not understand our relationship with Our Father. Now we are light in the Lord. We now live, not to please ourselves, but to please Our Father. We bring the light of life to the world and we offer them the good things God has given to us. He is not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to a knowledge of the truth. We bring light to the dark world. We bring understanding of the goodness of God to those who have not known Him. We are to live for what He lives for. We are to live as children of the light.
Live as children of the Light. We have Peace when we live as children of the Light.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." (NIV)
Jesus did not come to condemn us. He came to save us. He came to save the world. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned. Believing in Him brings us into the relationship with God that He wants for us. We are not condemned.
Don’t live as condemned. Do not live as if you think God hates you. Do not live as if you think His love is so short that it cannot include you. Trust that His love is bigger than any problem you have, even if you caused it.
Live as forgiven children. Forgiveness is offered to those who will be honest about what is in their hearts. Just bring your shortcomings to the light. He offers forgiveness. Accept it. Live as forgiven children.
Walk in the light. Whoever lives by the truth comes to the light. When we are honest with ourselves and with God we are living in the light. We no longer try to hide from Him, but we honestly confess our failures. Forgiveness is free when we admit our faults to Him. Walk in the light. Live as children of the Light.
Verse 20 said, “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”
“…for fear that his deeds will be exposed.” Honesty brings our deeds into the light. There is no fear when we believe in the love and forgiveness of God. He will cleanse us and lead us to live as He intends us to live. He will help us to become the loving creatures we were created to be.
God’s perfect love casts out our fear. We can be open with Him. We can be honest with Him. He loves us and changes us as we walk with Him, as we walk in the light of His love.
Walk as children of the Light.
What greater gift to give than the gift of the truth about God’s love for us?
We live in the light as we live honestly before the Creator. Our Father, like all good fathers, forgives us, teaches us and helps us to learn His ways.
Walk in the light as He is in the light. His love for us casts out our fear.
We have peace with God. We are not condemned!!!
Once we were darkness. Now we are light. Walk in the light of God. We are the children of the Light.
Live truthfully with God. Live as children of the Light.
He loves us. That has never changed. It will never change. Why will it never change? Because Our Father, Our Creator never changes.
We may change. He never will. Remember what James taught us. He does not change like the shifting shadows.
We must change. He never will. Put your trust in the Father of lights.
Live as children of the Light.
Peace comes as we accept the truth about God. He loves us. He always will. He offers forgiveness. We experience His forgiveness as we face the light. We experience His love as we turn toward Him, not away from Him.
We are children of the Light. Live as children of the Light.
We have been given the gift of Peace with God.
Accept the gift and …
Live as children of the Light.
